The Psalms were written as prayers for the Hebrew people to sing. In the Psalms, we also drink of divine praise from its pure source. The songs expressed their deep feelings about God or their prayers to God.
Psalms were actually songs sung by the ancient Jewish people to express their adoration to God. In early Bible times, as you passed a field, you might have heard the workers singing one of the psalms. Or you might have heard a family singing a psalm as they relaxed while sitting under their fig tree, for the psalms are the songs of men who actually understood who God was. Each Psalm is a worship event. Therefore, if we are to pray well, we too must discover the Lord to whom we speak, the God who revealed Himself to us in the mirror of the Psalms.
The Psalms are not only the revealed Word of God; God Himself has given us psalms to sing to please Him. The Psalms are the incarnate Word, containing all of the Old and New Testament truths, the whole mystery of Jesus Christ. God’s intention for the Psalms is for the Church to love singing them, because in singing them, the Church expresses adoration to God.
The Psalms are mirrors that reflect who we really are, sinners in need of redemption, and as we pray them we will see our sin more clearly than ever before. Yet we also see in these mirrors the fruits of Christlikeness. Look deeply into each mirror and you will see God.
The Psalms are poetry, not in English but in Hebrew, and their poetry had rhythm as they accentuated different phrases. The truth is, if we fail to be moved by reading the Psalms, there's a good chance we are hard-hearted, covering our sin instead of confessing it, and do not understand the truth of our need for redemption. For when we grasp the truth of the Psalms, we cannot help but be moved to respond to God's wooing.
We cannot articulate words in our own intellect to worship the one true, holy and almighty God. Praise is cheap in this day and age. In fact, everything and everyone gets praise, whether they deserve it or not. Just look around and see what and whom the world praises, and then ask yourself: Are there any superlatives left for the only Omnipotent and Omniscient One?
To understand the Psalms, we must let them penetrate the very core of our hearts, for it is only then that we can be changed. In the Psalms we learn to understand who God is, how much He loves us, and how much He deserves our praise. The Psalms only reveal their full meaning to those who use them in order to pray and praise God.
“And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; speaking to yourself in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord” (Eph 5:18-19, KJV).
