What is Intercession?

“Intercession” as a synonym for “prayer”. It is acceptable to use the words interchangeably, but not when we are dealing with them as technical terms. Prayer, generally speaking, means talking to God. Intercession is coming to God on behalf of another. All intercession is prayer, but not all prayer is intercession. “Intercession” is derived from the latin inter, meaning “between” and cedere, meaning “to go”. Intercession, then, is going between or standing in the gap. God spoked through Ezekiel the prophet “ And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none”.(Ezek22:30.KJV). Very clear reference to intercession. Intercession is the act of pleading by one who in God’s sight has a right to do so in order to obtain mercy for one in need.

Crisis Intercessor: Praying exclusively on assignment, set as watchman to keep the wall up!

Warfare Intercessor: Especially to engage the enemy in high-level spiritual warfare to keep the gate shut!

Personal Intercessor: To pray on a regular and intense basis for the people so that He might sanctify and cleanse them with His word. Therefore, they will call upon Him for repentance of their sin and He might restore revelation to their soul.

"The king's heart is in the hand of the Lord, as the rivers of water: He turneth it whithersoever He will." (Prov21:1.KJV) The gift of intercession is the special ability that God gives to certain members of the Body of Christ to pray for extended periods of time on a regular basis and see frequent and specific answers to their prayers. Intercession is not one of any spiritual gifts mentioned specifically as gifts in the New Testament. When God calls members of His family to a certain task or ministry, He provides them with the supernatural gifting to accomplish it according to His will. Therefore, for those He has called into the throne room as intercessors, He has provided the spiritual gift of intercession. The two chief characteristics of those with the gift of intercession are that they love to pray and that they see the results of their intercession. All Christians have a desire to be close to God. The fact of the mater is that for the majority of Christians the time set aside for prayer is relatively short, and the actual feelings of closeness to God during those periods of time are not joy and delight. Intercessors are not just average Christians any more than evangelists or pastors or prophets or teachers are. Part of their difference from others is their intimate relationship with the Father. An important part of what happens when intercessors spend long periods of time in very close relationship to God is that they hear directly from Him. Gifted intercessors call this the "Strategy of Silence." In the strategy of silence they go before God to seek His direction even in what they should pray about and how they should pray. Openness and obedience are keys to hearing from God. At times the instructions God gives are almost as unconventional as when He told Hosea to take a wife of whoredoms for the land had committed great whoredom, departing from the Lord (Hosea1:2). Gifted intercessors anointed for this strategy of silence have spiritually developed the discernment to know when it is authentic.

"There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the Lord, that shall stand."
(Prov19:21.KJV)

It is also clear in Matthew 25 that God is the One who decides who gets what talents and how many. The gift of intercession is one of the spiritual gifts God distributes to the Body of Christ. All Christians must fulfill their role as intercessor, but some have a gift and ministry far above the average Christians. If you have a gift of intercession, you will grow in your desire to pray. The Holy Spirit through Paul told us, "It is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure." (Phil 2:13.KJV). Part of receiving a spiritual gift is to receive supernatural help from the Holy Spirit to bring about the effectiveness of your gift to do ministry.
